How long does it take to become a PMU artist?

Many people who love permanent makeup want to know how long they need to study before they can confidently take clients. The honest answer is that the foundation course is fairly short, but practicing to a solid level takes more time. This article walks through each stage.

How long the foundation course takes

The length of a foundation course varies from academy to academy, so instead of focusing only on the number of hours, it is better to prioritize a place that gives you the most time with the main artist. In many places, much of the hands-on time is actually guided by teaching assistants. At NP PMU Academy, it is Ms. Nhung Phan herself who teaches the class and gives feedback on students' work, not an assistant. Because you are guided correctly from the very start, you practice more accurately and save a great deal of time later on.

From finishing the course to confidently taking clients

Finishing the foundation course does not mean your skill is immediately solid. Most artists need extra time practicing on synthetic skin and working on models under guidance before taking real clients. This period varies for each person, depending on how much they practice and their aptitude, so there is no fixed number for everyone.

What you need to prepare

Beyond technique, you need certification in safety and bloodborne pathogen control, since this is a basic requirement for practicing safely. Keeping sterile habits and using single-use needles is essential from the very start of training. Skilled, beautiful work comes from steady practice and continually updating your knowledge.
